Dear Friends,

I have recently been informed that National Council of Young Israel (NCYI) is having a meeting of the Delegates Assembly on this coming Thursday, June 24th, during which they plan to vote to expel our synagogue, Shaarei Torah Orthodox Congregation of Syracuse.  This is in spite of the fact that we legally resigned from them on August 24, 2008.  According to their constitution, the assets of any synagogue that is expelled revert to NCYI.

We have prepared a position paper that details the history of what occurred, and explains why we resigned.  We would like as many delegates as possible to be made aware of our story.  If you know members of Young Israel synagogues in other cities, please send them the link to this website.

With thanks,

Beverly S. Marmor

President

Shaarei Torah Orthodox Congregation of Syracuse

UPDATE

June 23, 2010

Dear friends,

Tonight the President and the Chairman of the Board of NCYI sent a memo to the delegates regarding tomorrow night’s meeting (Thursday, June 24th at 7 p.m.), stating that “The delegates meeting tomorrow evening will not include any discussion of the Young Israel of Syracuse issue.”

The fourth paragraph is as follows:

“NCYI never wanted to close Young Israel of Syracuse or "steal" its assets. We wanted only to resolve our differences in an equitable manner. YI of Syracuse owes NCYI over $20,000 in past dues.  When we attempted to negotiate a settlement of arrears and arrange for the payment of prospective dues, they purposely used the issue of their having elected a female president as a smoke screen to resign from the Council without paying what they owed.”

NCYI has tried time and again to meet with YI of Syracuse.”

We would like to point out the following:

  1. 1.The amount of dues that is owed has been in dispute for many years.

  2. 2.In July and August of 2008, when their confrontation with us led to our resignation, NCYI never once raised the issue of dues. The precipitating issue that led to their threats and our resignation was the fact that we have a woman president.

  3. 3.Despite multiple invitations, NCYI never came to our shul. They only wanted to come when they knew we were discussing whether we would resign.  Last week, they did try to summon us to New York.
